I am currently completing a Wellcome Trust funded 4-year PhD in Integrative Neuroscience at Cardiff University (UK). For my PhD I have been investigating the role of 5-HT2A/2C receptors in the expression of non-convulsive seizures in genetic and pharmacological models of absence epilepsy using EEG and unit recordings in freely-moving animals. My IN-SENS post-doctoral training at the AstraZeneca Translational Science Centre will give me an opportunity to move my research focus to mental illness. In particular, I will work on the Disrupted in schizophrenia-1 (DISC1) gene, which has been associated with major depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, using a novel line of DISC-1 transgenic rats. Combining chronic telemetry EEG recordings and biochemistry, I will explore the changes in prefrontal cortex and cerebellar network activity and their correlates at the level of DISC-1 protein and its interacting partners. This will further our understanding of the role of the cerebellum in mental disorders and of how DISC1 can orchestrate changes in network activity across development.
