Translation of DISC1 pathways into human mental illness
Ultimately, it is of paramount importance to define and identify the significance of DISC1 and its pathway in human behavioural disorders. Results from rodent models will be compared to gene expression in human PBMCs and plasma protein expression derived from schizophrenia patients and healthy controls to find common mechanisms.
Expression of DISC1-related genes in patients will be assessed with respect to effects of positive and negative symptoms (PANSS) and cognition related to hippocampal (verbal learning) and prefrontal function (working memory, WCST, attention: CPT), which are core symptoms in schizophrenia. Furthermore, prospectively, effects of atypical antipsychotic medication will be investigated.
